Easy Way to Calculate Your BMI

Before we begin learning how to calculate BMI or Body Mass Index, let’s start this discussion with what actually is BMI. This term refers to a tool that can be used to find out whether we have an ideal weight or not when compared to our height. This theory was formulated by a scientist Adolphe Quetelet between 1830-1850. While the theory has been around for hundreds years ago, today we still use it almost exactly as the first time it was formulated.

It is true that, based on later inventions, BMI is not really give us final result whether we have an ideal weight or not, it is still the first measurement that usually used to check our ideal weight. For most common people, the result given by the tool is quite accurate to determine if we are at over weight, normal weight, or under weight. However BMI doesn’t separate the weight from fat and muscle. This is why this tool can’t give an accurate result for athletes or other muscular people. In this case, we need other tool to calculate the exact amount of fat we have.

After you understand the formula, it is not difficult to calculate BMI, we only need to divide our weight with height square, or in simple term kg/m2. First, measure your height in meters then square it, it simply means take the number of meters times itself. Next, divide the number with your weight, in kilograms.

For example, if you are 5.5 ft in height, it’s about 1.7 meters, you need to multiply 1.7×1.7 that is equal to 2.89, this is the number you need. Now convert your weight into kilograms. If your weight is 200 pounds, it is about 91 kilograms.

Now, to determine your BMI you need to divide your weight by the height squared, in this case, 91 divided by 2.89. It will give you about 31 in result. On this example, you can be classified as obese. How can we know it?

According to the formula, if you have 18.5 or below BMI you can be classified as underweight while to be classified as an overweight people, the BMI is around 25 to 29.9, and a 30 or higher BMI is for obesity range. So, if you have BMI of 31, you are in the range of obesity though not really much.

In this example, you only need to lose around 11 pounds (5 kilograms) of your weight to get yourself out from the obese range, and to be able to have an ideal weight, you need to lose around 42 pounds. Now we can understand that calculating BMI can give us a clue of how much weight we need to lose (or gain) so we can have an ideal weight.

If you are not sure how to convert your weight in kilograms and your height in meters, there is a simple way to calculate your BMI. You only need to take your weight in pounds then multiply it with 4.88, then divide the result with your height in feet squared.

So if you are at 200 pounds of weight and 6 feet tall, the calculation is 200×4.88=976, then divide the number with 36 (6×6), the final result is 976 divided by 36, it’s 27.1. In this example, your weight is on a healthy normal range.
